Everything you need to know about Keto

Maybe someone you know is trying keto, or maybe you’ve seen a bunch of Keto recipes on TikTok, but do you really know what it is? Though it sounds like a strict diet, you would be surprised by how much ‘good’ food you can eat!

Food Energy

At a very young age, we learned that we must eat to fuel our bodies. When we eat, the carbohydrates in the food break down into glucose. Basically, the sugars and starches in any given food, breakdown into a different kind of sugar. The glucose is then absorbed by the stomach and small intestines and released into the bloodstream. The incredible thing about the human body is that it’s able to determine when it should use the glucose for energy.

Breakdown of the Diet

So, when you omit carbs from your diet, your body will have to resort to burning fat instead. This, as you might have assumed, leads to quicker weight loss. The main reason people start the keto diet is because they want to lose weight. The goal of the diet is to put your body in a state of ketosis. When your body is in ketosis, it can maximize fat loss. The process of burning fat makes acids called ketones, which can also be used for energy.

What Do You Eat on Keto?

If you want your body to be in a state of ketosis, you must consume under 20-50 grams of carbs per day. Some ‘healthy’ foods, like vegetables, can be high in carbs so it’s important to do your research. Some examples of keto-friendly foods are seafood, low-carb vegetables (like asparagus, avocado, broccoli, etc.), cheese, meat and poultry, eggs, nuts and seeds, and berries. You should do your best to avoid sugary foods, grains or starchy foods, fruit, beans, root vegetables, diet products, certain condiments, unhealthy fats, and alcohol while on keto.
