The Paleolithic diet, Paleo diet, caveman diet, stone-age diet, or whatever you know it as, primarily consists of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and lean meats and excludes dairy, grains, and legumes. No processed carbs or sugars. Paleo dieting is mainly a low-moderate carb diet with moderate healthy fats and LOTS of protein. Generally, when you are on a Paleo diet, you can still eat eggs, nuts, seeds, and healthy fats such as olive oil or coconut oil. However, there are many things that are not included in a Paleo diet, such as dairy, refined sugar, potatoes, and refined vegetable oils.
Aside from the basics of what the Paleo is, there are many health benefits from being on this diet. For one, it can help some people lose some weight and improve athletic performance, lower the risk of heart disease, blood pressure and inflammation. Eliminating all grains, dairy, processed foods, sugar, and more will most likely lead to weight loss. A diet rich in lean protein and plant-based foods can make you feel fuller and help control blood sugar levels.
I personally have dabbled with the Paleo diet, and it’s great if you’re looking to go on the lower carb side but not totally eliminating them. Don’t forget, no matter what diet or meal plan you choose, EXERCISE should always be included in your lifestyle, not just how you eat.
